Ringside Report: Ellie Scotney Goes Undisputed at Super-Bantamweight In A Truly Sensational Fight

If the crowd at the Olympia in London had been somewhat lukewarm during the earlier fights, they exploded into life for the undisputed world super-bantamweight championship bout between Ellie Scotney and Mayelli Flores. It was a gruelling, back-and-forth battle — a sure-fire fight of the year contender.

Scotney earned a deserved ten-round decision after twenty relentless minutes and can now call herself the undisputed champion of the world.
It was never easy for the 28-year-old Catford fighter. Flores pushed her incredibly hard. One judge had it close at 96-94 for Scotney, but the other two scoring officials gave Scotney every round. That felt harsh on Flores. In truth, it was too harsh.

Scotney threw everything at her Mexican opponent, and Flores soaked up everything that came her way. At times, it was breathtaking. The fight brought back memories of Mikaela Mayer vs. Maïva Hamadouche. It was that good.

Round six was the best round of the fight — the round in which Flores enjoyed her greatest success. For a moment, I thought the fight might be turning in her favour. But Scotney roared back strongly towards the end of the round. Flores had her moments, but Scotney had the last word.

Flores never stopped trying, but Scotney simply had a little too much for her. The margins were small, but they were enough. Scotney was brilliant in the eighth round — one of the rare rounds where she found some semblance of space. That pattern continued in the ninth. The final round was sensational, with both fighters emptying their gas tanks.

In simple terms, it was one of the best fights I have had the privilege of seeing from ringside. Both fighters deserve immense credit for the spectacle that they served up — a fight that will live long in the memory.

Scotney will likely move up to featherweight, but she leaves the super-bantamweight division with the full set of world titles around her waist.
