Ellie Scotney: Undisputed?

Ellie Scotney: Undisputed?

It’s one last piece of the jigsaw. One last belt to complete the full set. Undisputed status is on the line for Ellie Scotney on Easter Sunday. A fitting day for the deeply religious fighter. In truth, it couldn’t have worked out any better for her.

Jake Paul brings his Most Valuable Promotions to UK soil for the very first time. Scotney takes on Mayelli Flores live on Sky Sports. The 33-year-old Mexican brings her WBA world super-bantamweight title to the Olympia in London and is widely expected to go home without it. Scotney has the WBC, IBF, and WBO baubles already in her possession. The odds strongly indicate the Catford fighter will add the WBA belt to her collection.

The unified champion has done it the hard way. No vacant titles. No easy nights. Matched hard from the start of her professional career. Every world title won by beating a defending champion. The pattern continues this coming weekend. Scotney views Flores (13-1-1) as her toughest test to date. A fighter who hasn’t lost since 2022. In many ways, Flores will bring it. A tough night for both. But it’s for undisputed status, it should be exactly that.

Scotney is all in. Boxing is everything to her. “I am someone who has never stepped inside a nightclub. Boxing is my life,” Scotney once told me. “But it’s also a big part of my character as well. The only thing I watch is boxing. It’s quite worrying at times. But I feel like a lucky person, and I couldn’t imagine my life without boxing. Boxing is constantly on my mind, and I don’t think I would be myself without it. Boxing is just me. It’s all I have known, really.”

Just over a year ago, the sport tested her love. Her old promotional contract was coming to an end. Scotney was bereft of sponsors. A staggering statistic for a unified champion of the world. But what a difference a year makes. Scotney is now aligned with Jake Paul and MVP. Life is very different now for a fighter who should have a far higher profile. But that will undoubtedly change in the coming months. Ellie Scotney is now in the right place at the right time.

Scotney (11-0) will know nothing can be taken for granted on Sunday night. Scotney is 1/20 to win the one belt that has so far eluded her. The odds might be a little off, but they highlight perfectly just how good Ellie Scotney is. A supremely talented operator who, at 28, still has improvement in her. Scotney will only get better.

Unless something totally unexpected happens, Scotney should win. Everything indicates that. The scores are likely to be wide, and Scotney will once again demonstrate the incredibly high level that she operates at. Flores will be brave and last the distance. But her night will more than likely end in defeat. Scotney will leave London the undisputed super-bantamweight champion of the world. One mission accomplished, Scotney will then move up to featherweight and look to do the same in her new weight division. We are just at the beginning of the Ellie Scotney story.
