Ellie Scotney: The Road to Undisputed
The road to undisputed has been long for Ellie Scotney. Nothing has come easy. Everything earned. Too many times, the hard way. Inactivity, injuries, being under valued, have all delayed the somewhat inevitability of Ellie Scotney having the full set of baubles at super-bantamweight.
There have been struggles. Often fighting lower down a card, often without the recognition that should have come her way. Scotney was matched hard from the very beginning of her career. I was ringside in 2023 when Scotney won her first world title. A one-sided points decision over Cherneka Johnson earned Scotney the IBF super-bantamweight world title. For context, Johnson is now the undisputed bantamweight champion of the world. Easy fights passed her by.
But the end destination is now seemingly in reach. With the WBC, IBF, and WBO titles safely in her collection, only one remains. The 33-year-old Mayelli Flores, the WBA champion, should be next. It should have happened already, but injury has delayed the chance to claim the final piece of the puzzle.
If, as expected, Scotney does go undisputed in the coming months, even that you sense is only the beginning for a fighter who is already arguably the best female fighter in the country, and one of the top five in the world.
Scotney will not look too far into the future, and Flores will, of course, have other ideas, but if the WBA title is secured in the coming months, a new division and more belts to collect are likely to follow, and Scotney trying to go undisputed in a second weight division.
The former WBC featherweight champion Skye Nicolson has made no secret of her desire to fight Scotney, but as much as I would like to see that particular fight, I don’t see it happening, at least in the short term. Scotney has said she will move up to featherweight. That 27-year-old body is craving a few more pounds, and you sense the featherweight ranks are wide open for Scotney to dominate another weight division.
Despite being in the final stages of her trailblazing career, Amanda Serrano still holds two of the world featherweight titles. The WBC champion Tiara Brown and the IBF title holder Nina Meinke make up the list of fighters with a claim to be the featherweight champion of the world. Scotney will surely have an eye on all three of those champions.
Scotney made the move to Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions last year, and that ever-increasing stable of elite female fighters is where Scotney will see her career rise to even greater heights. Make no mistake, signing with MVP has changed everything for Ellie Scotney.
I still think Scotney goes under the radar somewhat, but with the Jake Paul promotional machine behind her, that should now change, especially if MVP align with Sky Sports and starts doing shows on UK soil.
With the likes of Serrano and Katie Taylor likely to retire at some point in 2026, Scotney could be in contention for the best female fighter on the planet by the end of this year. The pound-for-pound lists will see a changing of the guard, Scotney, if the right fights come her way, will surely then be given the credit her talents deserve. Finally.
