Kaye Scott: Third Time Lucky?

Kaye Scott: Third Time Lucky?

Kaye Scott will head back to Detroit on Saturday night, hoping it will be third time lucky on the world stage. The 41-year-old Australian hasn’t quite got over the line in two previous world title fights. Desley Robinson beat Scott in Sydney last December in a fight for the vacant IBF middleweight title. But in September, with the WBA and WBC middleweight baubles on the line, Scott thought she had got over the line.

The American Olivia Curry was in the opposite corner in Detroit, but despite a determined effort, Curry appeared to have lost the fight. However, to Scott’s dismay, the judges saw it differently, and the Australian had to settle for a majority draw.

Scott was deemed desperately unlucky by many, not to have her hand raised in victory, and a rematch always looked likely. Even more so, when the fight was an obvious fight of the year contender. Nobody would complain if we got to see it again. And we do.

Scott and Curry will look to find daylight in their personal rivalry in their second visit to the Fox Theater in Detroit. The WBC and WBA middleweight baubles will again be on the line. Third time lucky, or the last throw of the dice? Scott will know that this time she has to leave no doubt in the minds of the judges.

Despite appearing to be a clear winner on the cards after ten good, hard rounds in September, Scott will know she has to fight smarter the second time around. After a good start in the opening few rounds, Scott neglected her superior boxing skills and got dragged into her opponent’s kind of fight. Curry deserves credit for making it into her type of fight, but Scott will surely look to avoid the mistakes of the first fight.

The betting odds reflect the result of the first fight. The bookies are struggling to split them. Rematches are usually decided by who can improve the most from the first fight. Curry will have other ideas of course, but Kaye Scott would appear to be that fighter. If she sticks to the game plan, Scott, you would assume has more room for improvement. I am of the understanding that her training camp has gone better than it did for the first fight three months ago. Scott went into the last fight looking to prove a point to herself and silence a few naysayers. This time, the former elite amateur knows she just has to win. It really could be third time lucky for Kaye Scott on Saturday night.
