Christina Desmond: “For any boxer, amateur or professional, the main goal is to win a world title, and my goal is not any different.”
The highly-decorated Christina Desmond has made the decision to leave the amateur ranks behind. Desmond had over one hundred amateur fights. A resume that included nineteen Irish titles and medals at European and World level.
But after much success, Desmond decided a new chapter was needed. “I had spent so many years as an amateur, but I was always itching to make the switch to professional,” the 29-year-old told FightPost. “I just wasn’t in the right mindset. Last year, my coach, Tom Power and Kevin Crowley, who is now my manager, approached me, and we all decided on the move. It was always something I wanted to do, and I am so happy I decided to go with it. I feel I have nothing to lose.”
The Cork fighter made her professional debut on Friday night at the National Stadium in Dublin with an impressive second-round stoppage over the Polish import Joanna Fraszczak.
“I am so happy with my debut,” Desmond relayed to me. “I was obviously extra nervous and anxious about my first pro fight. I’ve been waiting months for it, and I have a lot of training down in the lead up, and I just wanted to put on a show for all those who made the journey up to see me and all who were tuned in to Thriller TV. I was happy once I put on a good performance, and obviously, the win was my number one aim, but to get a stoppage was just so special.”
“I was happy enough with my performance,” Desmond added. “It was my first fight without headgear and the smaller gloves. I know once I got my first shot off, I’d settle. Overal,l I’m happy, but I have so much more to show. It’s a work in progress.”
“The sooner, the better,” Desmond says when I ask how soon she wants to be out again. “I want to get the ball rolling.”
Christina Desmond was incredibly successful in her old world, and she wants to replicate that success in the professional ranks. “I would like to be kept busy and get up through the ranks. For any boxer, amateur or professional, the main goal is to win a world title, and my goal is not any different.”
Boxing is a team game. No fighter does it alone. Desmond is appreciative of all those who have supported her. “I want to add a special thanks to my supporters who travelled and tuned in all over the world. My family, friends, and colleagues who have helped me over the last few months and believed in me. My trainers, Tom Power, Noely Murphy, and all at Saint Martha’s Boxing Club in Cork. My manager, Kevin Crowley. Jay Byrne and all his team with JB Promotions for allowing me on the show and, most of all, my sponsors, who it wouldn’t be possible without their backing.”
