Hannah Robinson: Moving Into The Title Picture

Hannah Robinson: Moving Into The Title Picture

It’s fight number five this weekend for Hannah Robinson, when she faces Beccy Ferguson at the Rainton Meadows Arena, Houghton-le-Spring, looking to build on the best win of her professional career to date last time out.

In June, Georgia Klein was an unbeaten fighter who came with plenty of ambition herself, but she found Robinson too much for her, losing every one of the six rounds, albeit in a competitive fight.

It was a night where the former two-time National amateur champion showed real glimpses of her undoubted potential. A fighter settling quite nicely into the world of professional boxing. Robinson showed patience, and while Klein was always trying to change the trajectory of her night, the former amateur star was always seemingly a step or two in front of her.

Beccy Ferguson will offer a different set of problems for Robinson on Saturday night. A tough fighter with a somewhat unflattering 6-14 resume, and she is coming off four straight defeats, and the odds say that her recent form won’t improve against Robinson. But Ferguson always comes to fight, and the unbeaten prospect will have to work for her likely victory. But the outcome will probably be how Robinson gets her win, rather than if she wins.

Robinson is quietly but affectively adjusting to the professional ranks after an amateur career that didn’t quite reach the heights that it probably should have. Ferguson will be her third outing of the year after just two fights in 2024. That slow start to her professional career is now a thing of the past, and her apprenticeship is nearing its conclusion. Next year should be where Robinson moves into the next stage of her career. The hunt for titles will start. Lightweight will likely be her home when that search for belts starts in force in 2026. A natural rival in fellow prospect Gemma Richardson would be worthy of a British title. Robinson and Richardson are moving at a similar pace, and a fight between the pair could move a step closer at some point next year.

But domestic titles are unlikely to completely satisfy the ambitious former Team GB star. World titles were always the aim when Robinson left the amateur ranks behind a few years ago. After a period chasing titles on the domestic and European front, 2027 could be where the world stage opens up for Robinson. The likes of Caroline Dubois, Beatriz Ferreira, Terri Harper, and Stephanie Han will probably unify their division in the next twelve months or so, but there is every chance that the lightweight baubles will then splinter at some point in 2027. If that does happen, Hannah Robinson could then be ready to launch herself on the world stage. Timing is everything, and she could be in the right place at the right time.

But for the immediate future, it’s about taking small steps. The right steps in her progression. A steady increase in the quality of opposition as Robinson moves closer and closer to her desired goal.

Hannah Robinson has potential, and plenty of it. A stellar amateur career indicates major titles should be in her future. But Robinson will need to keep an eye on the present and a certain Beccy Ferguson on Saturday night. Even in fights, you are expected to win; how you win is a good indication of what the future holds. If Robinson improves further from her fight with Klein, she might even get the first stoppage on her resume.

The move into the title picture is looming and fast. Hannah Robinson is perhaps going under the radar somewhat. That is likely to change in the coming months. In truth, it should. Jake Paul and his Most Valuable Promotions are assembling an elite stable of fighters, including a plethora of up-and-coming talent. Robinson wouldn’t look out of place on that roster. But maybe Ben Shalom could take a look at adding Robinson to the Boxxer stable. Fighting on the BBC would certainly elevate the profile of the unbeaten prospect. It could be good business for both Shalom and Robinson.

In many ways, all Robinson needs is time. If she keeps winning and improving at the rate expected, the big-time promoters should eventually come calling. They should.
