Alice Pumphrey: “I’m 100% confident I’ll be coming home with another world championship gold medal.”

In 2024, Alice Pumphrey travelled to America and came home with a gold medal at the World U19 Championships. In September, Pumphrey will head to Liverpool, hoping to do the exact same thing at the World Senior Championships.

The once-promising footballer is destined for big things in boxing. In truth, she has achieved plenty already. An already impressive amateur resume could hit yet another peak in Liverpool next month. The 19-year-old is looking forward to testing her skills on the big stage. “I’m so excited to box in the world championships in Liverpool. It’s the biggest tournament yet for me, and I can’t wait to perform in front of the British fans. It’s an honour to be selected to represent Great Britain at a major tournament, especially on home soil. It’s a chance for me to prove I belong on the big stage and to show all the work I’ve put in.”

Pumphrey, despite still being relatively new to the senior scene, is extremely confident of replicating her success in 2024 and being crowned a world champion again. “I’m 100% confident I’ll be coming home with another world championship gold medal,” Pumphrey told FightPost. “It’s definitely a step up from the U19 last year, but myself and everyone at GB believe I will rise to the occasion. But it’s definitely about gaining experience as well. These major tournaments are stepping stones to the Olympics, and I want to get as much experience as possible.”

In forty-eight fights, Pumphrey has only tasted defeat four times in her impressive career. Her time as a senior has been somewhat short, but the Blackpool fighter is adapting quite nicely to her new world. “Being a senior now, the camps are tougher and the fights are tougher, but that’s what I love. Boxing’s a lifestyle now. I’m up at GB every week in Sheffield, grafting week in and week out, and will be ready for anything thrown at me.

“I won the Boxam tournament in February in my first time boxing as a senior. I then went on to win a National title, and I went to the World Cup Grand Prix, losing on a 3-2 split to an Olympian. The senior fighters are more experienced and tougher. I can’t walk through people as easily anymore. I have to use my IQ, but I love that side of boxing, too.”

Alice Pumphrey is a blue-chip prospect who has her entire future ahead of her, and it will likely be a golden future. Pumphrey has achieved plenty, but you sense that she is only just getting started. “The only focus at the minute is the world championships,” Pumphrey says of her immediate aspirations. “Then I’ve got the U23 Europeans at the end of this year. Next year I’ve got the Open Europeans and then the Commonwealth Games. So I’ve got a busy couple of years ahead of me, and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics are definitely the end goal before turning professional.”
