The Future Is Now: Tiah-Mai Ayton Shines On Her Professional Debut
Tiah-Mai Ayton couldn’t have been more impressive on her professional debut. Tougher tests will undoubtedly follow, but the 18-year-old looks like a potential star of the future. The British female ranks badly need a shining light to propel women’s boxing to a golden future; we might have seen that fighter on Saturday night.
Ayton stopped the Hungarian Sara Orszagi in three incredibly one-sided rounds in Birmingham to kick-start a professional career that many think will end with multiple world titles. Orszagi, who ruined the debut of Ruth Huntley earlier this year, never looked like replicating that against the highly touted Ayton. Orszagi was beyond brave, but the sight of her head repeatedly bouncing back from the right hand of Ayton that couldn’t seem to miss the intended target, was starting to get uncomfortable.
The end came after just twenty-three seconds of the third round, after two knockdowns that prompted the referee to call a halt to the proceedings. In truth, Orszagi, perhaps, could have been pulled out by her corner a little earlier. But that finish by Ayton will create significant buzz for a fighter that could be something really special indeed.
The former World U19 World Amateur Champion didn’t lose in her twenty-one-fight amateur career, and from what we saw in Birmingham on Saturday night, you can see why. Tiah-Mai Ayton looks to have that star quality. The fight with a somewhat limited Orszagi is only the beginning. But what a start it was. Eddie Hearn might well have signed a future superstar.
