Alice Pumphrey: “I know I can beat anyone that is put in front of me.”
The winning feeling goes on for Alice Pumphrey. A young fighter seemingly destined for the very pinnacle of her sport. Pumphrey has followed on from winning the World Boxing U19 Championships last year in America, replicating that gold medal in Colorado with another in Spain last week at the Boxam Tournament.
“It doesn’t compare to the World Title, but this gold medal is just another step on the ladder for me. I’m just happy to be getting fights and gaining more experience preparing for the bigger picture,” a delighted Pumphrey told FightPost.
The latest success for the 18-year-old was even more satisfying because it was her senior debut and the first appearance boxing under the GB Boxing banner. “Senior and GB debut done in style, but I don’t expect anything less. Making my debut in a tournament like this with all the top countries in the world with lots of Olympians is exciting. It shows that I’m up there with the best already.
“The only difference I noticed is that my opponents were more durable and tougher than they were when I was fighting as a Youth. But I’d rather have it that way instead of having easy fights. It will help me improve a lot quicker having more competitive opponents.”
Pumphrey hasn’t lost a fight in three years. A phenomenal statistic and one that highlights her potential. But Pumphrey is taking everything in her stride. “I don’t feel any pressure at all when I’m in the ring,” Pumphrey told me. “I know I can beat anyone that is put in front of me. My whole team is very confident as well like I’m expected to win. The only thing that I think about is to box my best, and it will be enough to win.”
Pumphrey has previously told me of her lofty ambitions. The desire to win an Olympic gold medal and then to go undisputed at four different weights as a pro. A fighter that is aiming exceedingly high. But the ambitious nature hasn’t taken away thoughts of her immediate fighting future, and the need to keep her feet firmly on the ground.
“I’m getting straight back in the gym ticking over till the next tournament, which I hope isn’t too far away.” Another tournament to enter. Alice Pumphrey will expect nothing less than another gold medal.
