Ellie Scotney vs. Mea Motu: Big Fight Preview
Matchroom’s latest visit might not carry the same sort of fanfare that the Saudi-backed shows have carried of late, but there is still plenty to look forward to nonetheless, including a world title fight between Ellie Scotney and Mea Motu that could be very special indeed.
Dalton Smith takes a little step back when he challenges for the European super-lightweight title against the French fighter Walid Ouizza. A win seems a mere formality, and Smith will surely discard the European bauble almost as quickly as he wins it and will move on to bigger and better things. Smith is 1/16 to win, and despite the drop back down in opposition, can be forgiven with what lies ahead. Expect Smith to yet again demonstrate his undoubted potential.
The fight of the night could be the near pick-em clash between Harry Scarff and Conah Walker for the British and Commonwealth titles. As the old saying goes, it’s a proper fight that promises to steal the show. Scarff is the slight betting favourite, but Walker will give him all the trouble he can handle. Scarff probably deserves the betting favouritism, but Walker shouldn’t be overlooked. It literally could go either way.
Ellie Scotney is 1/8 to successfully defend her unified world super-bantamweight titles against the unbeaten fighter from New Zealand Mea Motu. Scotney, who defends her IBF, WBO, and Ring Magazine titles, acknowledges that Motu is her toughest test to date. But in nine professional fights so far, Scotney has been matched tough from the get-go and hasn’t come remotely close to losing her unbeaten record. Since hooking up with Shane McGuigan, Scotney has more than found her groove and could be a class above her aggressive opponent.
But Moto oozes confidence and is seemingly relishing the opportunity to test her skills against the sublime Scotney, who by the end of the year could be in the running to being the best female fighter in the country and even in the conversation for the ever debatable pound-for-pound lists. Motu has overcome so much in her thirty-five years. A survivor of domestic abuse, Motu is inspiring to all. It’s extremely difficult not to be inspired by what she has been through to be where she is right now in her life. But, having to suffer the mental and physical abuse that her husband of the time inflicted on her for ten years is just a truly horrific tale. Moto not only survived, but her story is now one of hope for all and is beyond powerful and surely one day, will find its way onto film. The IBO champion gets the chance to add another little chapter to that story. Despite the long unflattering odds, a Motu victory can’t totally be ruled out.
The odds are seemingly against Motu, but it could be one of those fights where their respective styles are their opponents’ worst nightmare. Motu will not be found wanting for ambition and desire, and win, lose, or draw, will make Scotney work extremely hard for whatever comes her way on Saturday night.
