Ringside Report: Chantelle Cameron Outpoints Patricia Berghult in Birmingham

Chantelle Cameron dominated the former world champion Patricia Berghult over ten rounds in Birmingham on Saturday night to retain her WBC interim super-lightweight title. A victory that promises a whole lot more for 2025.

Cameron was in control throughout and was given a thoroughly deserved unanimous points decision. One judge gave Cameron every round, while the remaining judges gave Berghult a little more credit for her efforts. The scores were 100-90, 98-92, and 99-91. All three cards were in the realms of acceptable scoring. From ringside, I could only give Berghult one round.

I felt from the 4th round onwards, the ambition of the challenger started to fade somewhat after a reasonably even start. It became more a battle of survival rather than any realistic hopes of leaving Birmingham with an upset victory.

The opening three rounds were competitive enough, but Cameron took control down the stretch and showed her class to ease to a decision victory. The right hand was her primary weapon of choice for much of the second half of the fight. It landed with increased frequency. Berghult couldn’t seem to defend against it. Cameron couldn’t seem to miss with it.

Cameron had a really strong 5th round, where I felt she gave Berghult a good old-fashioned working over for most of the one-sided two minutes. It was a tough round for the Swedish import, and you could sense that she might not see the final bell. But Berghult dug in and survived the remaining rounds to see out the fight as Cameron couldn’t really force home her obvious advantage into something a little more.

Chantelle Cameron can now look forward and not behind. The next twelve months should bring her the really big fights that she craves. And deserves. The winner of the much-anticipated rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano is an obvious target. But far more likely is a fight at welterweight against either Natasha Jonas or Mikaela Mayer. Both have belts at 147, Cameron if Taylor or Serrano are not available, will surely target a world title at a second weight. 2024 was a year of finding herself again after a tough end to the previous year. 2025 will be a year of finding world titles and more.
