The Top Ten British Female Fighters

The Top Ten British Female Fighters:

A big weekend of fights for women’s boxing has prompted a slightly revised list of the top ten fighters in the country.

There is no change in the upper echelons of my list since my last update in July. Despite the loss of her WBO world welterweight title on Friday to Mikaela Mayer, Ryan holds her place in the top five of my rankings. The likes of Chantelle Cameron, Natasha Jonas, Ellie Scotney and Lauren Price should all return to action before the year is out.

All the activity is down below, with plenty of fighters moving up or down after recent results.

Terri Harper, despite being a two-weight world champion and only being 27, entered her fight on Saturday night against the unbeaten Rhiannon Dixon with her career very much on the line. The odds were in many ways against her. But Harper used her greater experience to outpoint Dixon in Sheffield to win the WBO world lightweight title. Now a three-weight world champion, Harper has now not only saved her career but can look forward to some very big nights ahead of her. Her win over Dixon has moved her up from 10th to 6th on my list.

Caroline Dubois is a possible future opponent for Harper. Her win in August over the tough and awkward Maira Moneo in Barnsley earned Dubois the WBC interim lightweight bauble, and her rise to the top is now firmly in progress. At 23, Dubois will only get better and has the potential to possibly be the best fighter on this list. Dubois moves up one place to number seven. She will surely go much higher in the next twelve months.

Despite losing her unbeaten record and her world title to Harper at the weekend, Rhiannon Dixon will come again. Experience was the key in Sheffield, and she was far from disgraced in suffering her first professional reversal. Dixon will undoubtedly return a better fighter after her experience at the Canon Medical Arena.

Savannah Marshall would be much higher if only she would fight inside a boxing ring again. With no boxing return seemingly imminent, Marshall drops to number nine. Her lack of activity will likely result in Marshall dropping out of the top ten altogether for the next update.

Nina Hughes is hoping to rematch Cherneka Johnson in the coming months and a chance to regain her WBA bantamweight title after their controversial first meeting earlier this year.

While not quite making the top ten, an honourable mention goes to Raven Chapman who fights Skye Nicolson for the WBC world featherweight title. A win over the unbeaten Australian will undoubtedly see her crack the top ten for the first time.
