Ringside Report: Jasmina Zapotoczna Shocks Maisey Rose Courtney in London
Jasmina Zapotoczna upset the previously unbeaten Matchroom prospect Maisey Rose Courtney at the Copper Box Arena on Saturday night.
Zapotoczna got a thoroughly deserved 10-round unanimous decision and, in the process, got the biggest win of a career so far. Zapotoczna also claimed the vacant World Boxing Association international flyweight bauble.
The Polish-born fighter boxed beautifully from the opening seconds, using her feet and greater reach to great effect. Courtney struggled to close the distance, and only in the final two rounds did she have any real success when Zapotoczna appeared to slow a little down the stretch. But by then, Courtney appeared to be in desperation mode. It was too little, too late. Zapotoczna found her timing and range incredibly quickly. Courtney never really did. At least, not on a consistent enough basis.
From ringside, I had Zapotoczna 6-4 up, and I couldn’t see or justify giving Courtney anything more. The three scoring judges saw it 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94. But however you scored it, there was only one winner. Zapotoczna was incredibly impressive, and those pre-fight odds of 3-1 for the upset win now look very wide of the mark. Zapotoczna was extremely confident pre-fight. Post-fight, we all now know why.
Courtney drops to 6-1, while Zapotoczna improves her resume to 8-1.
