Chantelle Cameron Signs With Frank Warren

Chantelle Cameron Signs With Frank Warren

Chantelle Cameron has, in many ways, seeked pastures new in recent times. That heartbreaking loss to Katie Taylor in their rematch last November prompted Cameron to ring the changes in her inner circle.

The decision to switch trainers might have come with some element of surprise. But the decision to change promoters was almost certainly a long time coming.

Cameron hasn’t been happy of late. A BBC interview earlier this year demonstrated perfectly her frustrations with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom. The bitter aftermath from that defeat to Taylor, a loss that took away her unbeaten record and her undisputed world super-lightweight baubles, was apparent in her words that were spoken from the heart. A parting of the ways was perhaps then always inevitable, more so when the long negotiations for a trilogy fight with Taylor ended with no reward for Cameron.

Chantelle Cameron is a fighter you sense who just wants to be appreciated and loved. And treated as more of a priority. She will hope that Frank Warren and Queensberry Promotions will bring her everything that she needs after the multi-fight promotional deal between the two parties was formally announced earlier today.

It would be wrong to say Cameron was promoted badly by Hearn in her time with Matchroom. But from the outside, the feeling was that they could have done a little more with her. Cameron always seemed to be lost in the mix somewhat. The fight with Katie Taylor was seemingly always there, and why it didn’t come before 2023 will always remain a mystery. And when it did eventually come, it was only because Taylor called her out on social media when Amanda Serrano pulled out of that long-awaited homecoming last May. Would she have got the Taylor fight without that call out? I have my doubts.

It is a new beginning for Cameron. Warren, you feel will give Cameron a greater prominence in his thoughts. A high-profile signing for the veteran promoter that could benefit all concerned.

Cameron (18-1) turns 33 later this month and is a fighter who still has many more big nights left in her. A third fight with Katie Taylor will always be in her thoughts. But that is far from her only option.

The likes of Mikaela Mayer, Natasha Jonas, and the rest of the red-hot welterweight division will be in consideration also. An opportunity to become a two-weight world champion will surely be a target for Cameron, who still retains plenty of ambition.

Cameron will return in the summer before targeting the big nights and the big fights. Now under the tutelage of Grant Smith in Sheffield, after amicably leaving Jamie Moore earlier this year, Cameron seems revitalised with her recent changes. But maybe more importantly, she seems happy. In recent times, that clearly hasn’t been the case. Cameron wants her old belts back again. She will seek new belts. Happy and hungry. That could be a real problem for her future opponents.
