Ringside Report: Adam Azim Wins The European Title

Ringside Report: Azim Wins The European Title

The victory may have been a touch on the predictable for Adam Azim, but the blue-chip prospect nevertheless impressed immensely in Wolverhampton on Saturday night when he stopped the tough veteran 35-year-old Franck Petitjean to rip the European super-lightweight title from his clutches.

It quickly became one-way traffic and target practice for the red-hot Azim who, after only ten fights as a professional, showed once again why he is quite rightfully considered one of the best prospects in the sport.

The former champion was brave and durable but rarely offered any real offence of his own, and the victory for Azim was never in doubt, even from the opening seconds. He dominated behind his excellent jab and he was always going to be too fast and powerful for his opponent.

A beautiful left hook to the body dropped Petitjean in the 5th, and his battle for survival, which by that point was exactly what it was, looked even more remote. Thoughts of victory had long since gone. He was pinned against the ropes near the end of the following round as Azim unleashed a salvo of punches that threatened the stoppage but the old champion saw the round out, and he at least came forward with at least some purpose for the first time in the fight in the 7th round. But his last effort soon petered out, and Azim finished the round well on top. The following two rounds saw the pace drop a little, and there were some signs that Petitjean might even see the final bell.

But Azim went to close the show in the 10th round, and when he dropped Petitjean for the second time near his own corner, the towel quickly followed.

It was difficult to fault Azim. He ignored the temptation to rush his work to try and force the stoppage. At 21, Azim showed maturity and patience beyond his years. Adam Azim is an exceptionally exciting prospect, and the frightening thing for his future opponents is that he will only get better. Boxxer and Ben Shalom look to have a real star on their hands.
