Hannah Robinson: A New Beginning

Hannah Robinson: A New Beginning

The progress of women’s boxing has been nothing short of remarkable over the last few years. Katie Taylor undoubtedly was a major factor when she turned professional in 2016. Taylor opened many doors the day she decided to test new waters. But her impact wasn’t immediate. There was still apathy, and it took the night that she nearly lost to Delfine Persoon in New York to change that. The perception of Taylor and her side of the sport suddenly started to change.

There is little doubt that the testing times of the pandemic were another major step forward. Giving a prominent place on the Matchroom behind closed doors shows the likes of Terri Harper, Natasha Jonas, and others delivered. After that, the momentum couldn’t be stopped.

The one knock on the female code is the lack of depth. But slowly but surely that is now changing. Former Team GB standout Hannah Robinson is the latest fighter to turn over and leave her amateur days behind. Robinson announced her decision to turn professional in July and will be a major addition to the ever-increasing professional ranks.

The two-time National Champion will be managed by Lee Eaton and trained by Jamie Moore, and with the undisputed light-welterweight champion Chantelle Cameron, training alongside her, the Darlington fighter will be in the perfect place to realise her undoubted potential.

Robinson 29, will box at the same weight as Cameron when she makes her maiden professional walk later this year. Make no mistake, Robinson is another exciting addition to the professional ranks, and she told FightPost in July, “I want to be in fights that people want to see.”

Robinson is ambitious and is aiming extremely high, but she is level-headed enough to know there is no rush.

“When I work my way up to a world title, I want to be a fully rounded fighter. I’m going to take as much time as I need to learn the game. I don’t want to peak too soon and get there before I’m ready,” Robinson told me when she announced her intentions to leave the amateur ranks for pastures new.

Robinson had much interest and competition for her signature on a professional contract. And with good reason. Hannah Robinson is one to watch on her professional journey, and she looks more than capable of following Cameron to world title glory.
