Ben Whittaker Blows Out Jordan Grant in Three Rounds
While much of the ring walk was lost on this old-timer, the performance most certainly wasn’t.
Echoes of a certain big punching featherweight from another era, Ben Whittaker showboated in the opening three minutes that some will have found distasteful, especially, when doing it against a clearly inferior opponent in Jordan Grant. But Whittaker got down to work in the 2nd round, dropping Grant before finishing the fight off in the opening moments of the 3rd round with the second and final knockdown of the fight.
Grant was brave and served his purpose, but it was all about a fighter who clearly has star quality. How good he is, and how far he will go, far better fighters than Grant will tell us in the coming years.
Whittaker dazzled on his debut. Flattered to deceive on enemy territory next time out. A spell on the sidelines followed that halted his momentum. But in Birmingham on Saturday night, the Olympic silver medallist served up a little reminder of what is to come.
Injury has kept Whittaker out of action since last August, and he will hope for a busier period in the months to come. Whittaker certainly has something very few fighters have. The demand for his signature on a professional contract was intense. Even in the embryonic stages of his career, we can see why. Boxxer invested heavily in their star pupil. It looks to be money well spent. But continued activity is the key for his progression. From what we have seen in recent headline fights, Whittaker and Adam Azim are key components for the future of their promoter.
