Skye Nicolson Ends Her Apprenticeship With a One-Sided Points Victory Over Linda Laura Lecca in Wales
The apprenticeship of Skye Nicolson has ended with a thoroughly dominating win over the former world champion, Linda Laura Lecca, in Wales on Saturday night.
Nicolson was impressive in Cardiff in recording a one-sided points decision over Lecca. The 80-72 scorecard was reflective on what the unbeaten Australian served up, and she will now take her career to the next level.
The Argentinean Sabrina Maribel Perez will be next for the ultra talented southpaw, a fight for the WBC Interim title, and a win will put Nicolson within touching distance of her maiden world title opportunity. With a record that flatters to deceive, closer inspection indicates Perez will have a tough night ahead of her when they meet later this year.
After a 150+ fight amateur amateur career that ended in the Tokyo Olympics with a wafer-thin points defeat to Karriss Artingstall, Nicolson now has seven professional wins to her resume. Those seven victories have shown immense promise with more than a touch of class. Nicolson dreams of world titles. From what we have seen so far, those dreams and hopes do not appear to be misplaced.
Lecca did her job in giving Nicolson some further learning rounds but struggled to even land a punch on the elusive southpaw, let alone put any kind of a mark on the scorecard.
Nicolson impressed again, her patented distance control and accuracy proving far too much for her Peruvian opponent. The featherweight prospect doesn’t waste any punches, and while some may criticise her style, it works for her. And that style will make Nicolson an extremely difficult fighter to beat. You can’t beat what you can’t hit. The temptation to change what she does best, should be resisted.
Boxing with patience and maturity Nicolson can be pleased with her night’s work in Wales. The 5th round was Nicolson at her best, demonstrating a little bit more aggression but not putting herself in any kind of peril whilst doing so.
Nicolson still seems like a fighter with many more gears to show, and I tend to agree with the narrative that we will see Nicolson at her best when she faces an opponent who comes with real ambition to win. That true test will likely come before the year ends. Make no mistake, it will take an exceptional fighter to beat Nicolson.
