Chantelle Cameron Becomes Undisputed
Chantelle Cameron realised her dream tonight in Abu Dhabi as she unanimously outpointed Jessica McCaskill over 10 rounds to be crowned the undisputed super-lightweight champion of the world.
It didn’t quite reach the heights expected, the styles didn’t gel, and any talk of a rematch, at any weight, will likely fall on deaf ears by all parties. Cameron especially needs to look elsewhere.
McCaskill looked off, her balance and timing seemed all over the place in the first half of the fight. And while she improved down the stretch, the gap on the scorecards was too wide to bridge. Scores of 97-93, 96-94 and 96-94 looked about right. This observer had Cameron winning seven of the ten rounds.
Cameron (17-0) provided the class, technically the better fighter, and at times her better greater skills made her opponent look decisively clumsy. McCaskill (12-3) improved as the rounds progressed, but she looked subdued and flat. But that shouldn’t detract too much from what Cameron served up, the British fighter was by far the better fighter.
Going undisputed gives Cameron options, but I doubt it will be enough to give her a place at the front of the queue to fight Katie Taylor. Looking good against McCaskill, even in victory, is problematic. Cameron will likely suffer because of it. Sometimes you need a little more, especially when some will look for excuses to make the fight with Taylor. The fight with Taylor might be a remote dream, at least for now, but the win gives her something to build on. A win was an absolute must for her. She did what she needed to. It wasn’t pretty. But it was enough.
Cameron boxed to orders and ignored the obvious temptation to brawl. And she won because of it. Hopefully, she will be allowed to build on her win.
McCaskill will be in demand, her losing performance and the manner of it will likely attract many a willing suitor. And she will likely earn plenty in the next defence of her undisputed world welterweight titles. They will bid high for her services.
