Ellie Scotney Wins The European Super-Bantamweight Title

The only surprise when Ellie Scotney had her hand raised, was the closeness of the judge’s scorecards. Scores of 97-93, 97-94 and 96-94 more than flattered the now ex-champion Mary Romero. Make no mistake, Scotney won far more comfortably than the scores would suggest.

The seriously impressive Scotney wouldn’t let Romero fight her fight. And despite her best efforts to change the trajectory of the fight, Romero was second best for the vast majority of the 20 minutes of action tonight at the Wembley Arena in London. Scotney claimed the European super-bantamweight title in a hugely-impressive performance, and with it, the promise of much more to come.

Scotney (6-0) boxed beautifully, highlighting the gulf in class between the pair. It was an exceptionally good performance by the Catford fighter. Scotney was heavily hyped when she turned pro a few years ago, she is now delivering on that hype.

It looked like a tough fight on paper, but in truth, it was anything but. Scotney showed her versatility, went through the gears when she needed to, and never gave Romero a foothold in the fight. After a slow frustrating start to her career, Scotney is now building some real momentum. It will take an exceptionally good fighter to beat her.

The IBF champion Cherneka Johnson could be next, with her apprenticeship now well and truly served, Scotney looks more than ready for a crack at a world title.
