Rhiannon Dixon: Making Up For Lost Time
Despite being five fights into her professional career, and entering her third fight as a Matchroom fighter, it is still very much a new beginning for Rhiannon Dixon. Now aligned with STN Sports and Paul Ready, a management alliance that should give the unbeaten Warrington lightweight prospect much more visibility.
Dixon will also begin the next stage of her highly promising career this weekend in Nottingham. Without any amateur background, Dixon needed a slow burn start to her professional journey. The entry into boxing came by way of the White Collar scene, she won every fight she had in that particular boxing arena and was tempted to try her skills in the real boxing world. The transition has gone well and the career of the punching Pharmacist holds much promise.
After two wins, Dixon hooked up with the former world champion Anthony Crolla, and the improvement has been obvious. This weekend in Nottingham, Dixon takes another little step up against Hungary’s Edina Kiss. The Hungarian has fought a who’s who of the boxing hierarchy. The likes of Mikaela Mayer, Cindy Serrano, Maureen Shea and others have all shared a ring with Kiss on their way to bigger things. Dixon will be the latest prospect to test her skills against the rugged veteran.
Dixon had a rough and tumble learning experience last time out in Spain. A tough and ready former Olympian Mahjouba Oubtil tested Dixon in many ways. But Dixon courtesy of a couple of knockdowns safely navigated her way to a points victory. It wasn’t pretty at times, but nevertheless, Dixon impressed and will grow plenty from her Spanish experience.
Kiss will provide Dixon with what she needs in Nottingham. Small steps. But important ones. At 27, there is no rush. Time is very much on her side.
Dixon has an exciting style and has power in her hands. And we will see more of her talent when she faces someone who comes with ambition to win rather than just merely to survive. We saw glimpses of her potential against Oubtil, against Kiss, we will see a little more.
There is talk of moving into the world of titles next year, and with a few more fights under her belt, that is more than realistic. Dixon has gone under the radar somewhat, probably to her benefit, but as her career advances that will undoubtedly change.
Crolla is very high on his young prospect, and his praise looks very well placed. Nothing we have seen so far should dampen the potential of Dixon. She is not on the Matchroom roster by chance. Dixon has seen her career stalled by Covid and injury, but is now back firing on all cylinders and is intent on making up for lost time. Dixon is definitely one to watch.
