FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Sergio Pettis
By Dan McConnell
Bellator and the UFC both held fight nights this past weekend with Bellator 238 Budd vs Cyborg and UFC Raleigh Dos Santos v Blaydes.
Inside the UFC’s octagon Curtis Blaydes impressed with a second round knockout victory over the tough former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos. This was the heavyweights fifth KO victory out of his eight victories inside the UFC.
Alex Perez’ 30-second triangle choke victory also was a possible contender and deserves a mention.
Cris Cyborg made history by becoming the most decorated women’s mixed martial artist of all time, by defeating Julia Budd to lift the Bellator women’s featherweight title. This was on her promotional debut and inside the arena where she lost her UFC featherweight title back in December of 2018.
However, another former UFC fighter was making his Bellator debut and most impressed me this week.
Sergio Pettis, the brother of former UFC lightweight champion Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis starched his opponent Alfred Khashakyan in the very first round!
The 26-year old Pettis was making his return to the bantamweight division and also promotional debut.
Pettis had size disadvantages to overcome, but this didn’t stop the fighter training under the experienced Duke Roufus putting his name on notice in the Bellator 135-pound division!
After making his debut with the UFC in 2013, Pettis went 3-3 in his last six fights before making the jump to Bellator. This move has certainly paid off for the young fighter.
For his impressive first round knockout victory inside the very first round of his Bellator debut. Sergio Pettis has won this week’s FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week award!
