FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Michael ‘Venom’ Page
By Daniel McConnell
Bellator MMA made their promotional debut in Japan this past Saturday night, with a crossover card with the MMA promotion Rizin. Japan is considered the birth place of ‘prized fighting’ in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts.
The Bellator action was held inside the Saitama Super Arena, which is well known for hosting historic nights under the PRIDE FC banner.
Saturday nights headliners in Fedor and Rampage became stars competing in this very arena, and have been making a name for themselves for the past 16 years.
But it was an exciting 170-pounder from London who took this week’s FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week award!
Michael ‘Venom’ Page otherwise known as MVP, took on and knocked out Shinsho Anzai in his own back yard, in the second round of their end of year clash.
MVP’s exciting entrances and impressive highlight reel finishes, have been something we’ve become accustomed too. He added to this and took his record to 17-1.
Many would argue that MVP hasn’t fought the toughest competition, but fighting five times this past calendar year is pretty impressive!
A decision victory over Paul ‘Semtex’ Daley in February, was followed up with a loss to former welterweight champion Douglas Lima. However it was his character shown to bounce back from the face of defeat that continued to prove the doubters wrong.
Page got back in the win column with three victories and two first round knockout wins over Richard Kiely at Bellator Dublin in September, Giovanni Melillo at Bellator London in November and his recent win over Anzai this past weekend.
There is no doubt MVP is one of the most entertaining and talked about MMA fighters in the world right now. But what’s next?
A rematch with Douglas Lima is on the card, while top contender Lorenz Larkin is also a potential matchup for the new year.
