FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Petr Yan
By Dan McConnell
With the UFC’s biggest and baddest card of the year taking place this weekend in Las Vegas, there were multiple contenders for this week’s award.
From Kamaru Usman’s excellent main-event victory over Colby Covington, Alexander Volkanovski’s surprise upset of featherweight kingpin Max Holloway and Irene Aldana’s first round knockout over Ketlen Vieira.
However, this week’s award goes to a fight who in my opinion doesn’t get enough credit.
Russian bantamweight Petr Yan opened the main-card against UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber.
The California kid-Faber, came out of retirement in July of this year after a three year layoff. A surprise to some first round KO win over the undefeated Ricky Simon sent shockwaves around the UFC’s 135-pound division.
This would be Yan’s next opponent and opportunity to continue his undefeated record to 14-1. With a win over Faber, a title victory will be in the Russians sights!
Yan looked absolutely dominant throughout the first two rounds, showing his toughness and reason why he is one of the most feared fighters on the planet right now.
A devastating third round head kick knockout, over one of the best and most respected fighters in the game secured the Russians fourteenth victory.
Yan has now recorded victories over John Dodson, Jimmie Rivera and now Urijah Faber. There is no doubt he should be fighting for Henry Cejudo’s 135-pound belt within the new year!
Congratulations Petr Yan on winning this week’s FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week award.
