UFC 245: The Perfect Welterweight Showcase
By James Lee
The UFC’s welterweight division is arguably thriving like it never has before. With the main event of UFC 245 being for the 170 lbs title, it almost seems like the card will show everything the division has to offer.
From two of the most skilled in the sport fighting for the world championship to another pair of the most exciting fighters in the organisation battling it out for contendership in the preliminary headliner.
Let’s not forget two from the last generation either in Matt Brown and Ben Saunders fighting with completely contrasting skills in what could be deemed a throwback to the sport’s early days. Saturday’s card has everything to prove why the welterweight division is the sport’s best.
The main event between current champion Kamaru Usman and former interim champion Colby Covington is one of the year’s most anticipated fights, as it has become a must-see fight because of the rivalry that has been building for at least two years.
Both have always been the rising, dominant fighter who slowly climbed to the top, but now they are at the top with nobody else left but each other.
Everybody knows the pre-fight talk is what will attract attention, but aside from that, the showcase of skill on fight night will be some of the highest level in the UFC.
Both have shown extreme dominance over world-class fighters and have gotten more dominant the further they have gotten up the rankings.
Nobody can even guess what will happen when the pair meet, but one thing that is for sure is how high the consequences are for both men.
Aside from the headliner, the fight between Geoff Neal and Mike Perry cannot disappoint, with two of the division’s most exciting, fighting in what should be a dangerous but appealing bout.
Both almost still have something to prove to the masses therefore the aggression will not be low, especially in Mike Perry who has never been in a dull fight since his UFC debut in August 2016.
Perry comes to finish every time and so does Neal. The opportunity to take so much from a win is available to both also. If Neal can become the first man to finish Mike Perry, he will certainly set himself up for a top ten opponent next.
On the other hand, a win for Perry will put in the rankings for the first time in his career.
Matt Brown will return from retirement on the card as well after a two-year break to take on fellow veteran Ben Saunders.
‘The Immortal’ finished Diego Sanchez in his last outing and although he hasn’t been as active as Ben Saunders recently, nobody can ever doubt his fighting résumé. He has fought some of the division’s greatest fighters ever and his return is a welcomed addition to the card.
Ultimately, the welterweight division will be on show this Saturday and it won’t disappoint.
Fighters at every stage of their career in the sport with excitement guaranteed.
