FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Robert Whiteford
By Dan McConnell
This past Friday and Saturday night UK mixed martial arts fan got treated to not one, but two nights of action-packed MMA entertainment in London!
On Friday night Cage Warriors returned to London for the highly-anticipated middleweight rematch between champion James Webb and Nathias Frederick.
Then on Saturday night Bellator London took place at Wembley Stadium, with home-town hero Michael Venom Page taking the next step in his quest for a rematch with welterweight champion Douglas Lima.
With European MMA all over my television screen this weekend, I had the perfect viewing of every fight up and down these stacked cards!
A 36-year old fighter called Robert Whiteford from Scotland, was stepping inside the Bellator cage for the very first time on Saturday night. His opponent, the tough and experienced veteran Sam Sicilia.
Whiteford and Sicilia have both competed in the UFC, and would finally cross paths. Whiteford was having a rough night loosing the first two rounds, unable to muster any form of offense.
While the American Sicilia looked to be in cruise control heading into the third and final round.
With a minute left of the contest, Sicilia made the mistake of looking up at the clock and almost losing his focus for the remainder of the fight.
Whiteford was pushing forward, applying pressure and caught his opponent with a clean uppercut against the fence, knocking him out with only 10 seconds left. Madness!
An incredible comeback from Robert Whiteford living up to his nickname ‘The Hammer’ and extending his win streak to four in a row.
In the post-fight interviews Whiteford opened up about his recent mental demons, battle with drink and issues in his personal life.
I think for his impressive comeback victory and braveness to open up about his recent struggles, Robert Whiteford deserves the FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week award!
