FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Kevin Lee
UFC 244 certainly delivered on practically every front imaginable, and many left New York with much greater career momentum than they entered it.
It also left me with the difficult task of picking this week’s FightPost MMA fighter of the week.
There were many candidates, Darren Till overcoming his own demons to announce himself in his new home. Jorge Masvidal closed out his fighting year in some style, forget the controversy over the stoppage, he dominated Nate Diaz from start to finish.
Corey Anderson deserves a mention for stopping the heavily hyped Johnny Walker in sensational fashion. But despite some stiff competition, I think Kevin Lee deserves this week’s honours.
Entering his fight with Gregor Gillespie, many felt it would be his third loss on the bounce, but Lee had other ideas.
After a brief flirtation at welterweight, Lee dropped back down to lightweight to take on the highly decorated wrestler.
Gillespie was unbeaten in 13 fights and looked set to be in the title picture inside the next 12 months, but Lee perhaps now going under the radar somewhat, knew a win would reignite his own faltering career.
Now learning his craft at Tristar under Firas Zahabi, and the move looks to have had immediate and much-needed success.
The unblemished record of Gillespie went courtesy of the left foot of Lee, a stunning one-kick KO that saw Lee’s recent 1-3 slump end in the most conclusive and spectacular manner.
Lee has had a difficult frustrating time of late, but he will be hoping this win will be the springboard to launch his career to the heights it once promised.
