Josh Taylor Unifies in London

Josh Taylor Unifies in London

There is a lot wrong with boxing, far too much to put right in all honesty, but in the main event at the O2 tonight we saw boxing at it’s best. Two quality fighters, two class acts served up a main course of Michelin star quality.

Great fights need that doubt, prior, during and after. Nobody could be certain who would have their hand raised after 12 rounds of the highest order, but it was Josh Taylor who prevailed over an exceptionally talented Regis Prograis.

Taylor on my card edged the opening two rounds, before Prograis showed his class in the next two rounds. The American at that stage must have felt confident it was to be his night, but Taylor took him out of his comfort zone to pull away on my card.

Taylor used his physical advantages in the middle rounds, and I had him up 7-3 in rounds as they headed into the final two rounds.

But Prograis wasn’t done, and I thought he closed the gap by winning the last two rounds in a thoroughly absorbing fight.

I had Taylor slightly up at the end by 115-113, the judges had it 114-114, 115-113, 117-112 in favour of Taylor.

The Scot unified the IBF and WBA super-lightweight champion and closed out the World Super Series in the process.

Boxing needs fights like this and nights like this makes you forget all the politics that ruin the sport.
