FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Jeremy Stephens

By Dan McConnell

It’s that time of the week where we crown the MMA Fighter of the Week, after the highs and lows around the world of mixed martial arts.

This weeks FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week is one who I think deserves more credit in the sport, and who lost his fight at UFC Boston this past Friday night.

Jeremy Stephens took on Yair Rodríguez in the co-main event of the night, as an almost warm-up act to a heavy-hitting, light-heavyweight title contenders fight later on the card.

And what a fight we got! I have decided to award this week’s honours to Jeremy Stephens not because he won the contest, but simply due to his heart, determination and never say die attitude to give up from he made his first walk to the octagon in 2007.

With an impressive list on names on his resume that includes fights against Rafael Dos Anjos, Anthony Pettis, Cowboy Cerrone, Darren Elkins, Max Holloway, Frankie Edgar, Jose Aldo and Zabit Magomedsharipov. Is there a more crowd pleasing fighter who isn’t getting praise throughout the entire UFC roster?

Yair Rodríguez dominated Stephens in the first round, having him hurt on a number of occasions. In the second Yair continued his high-powered offense, clipping Stephens with punches, kicks and knocked him down with a nasty body-shot. This looked the end was near!

Stephens didn’t panic and continued to defend himself, with a little lenience from the referee. The featherweight fighter was able to survive and scramble back to his feet to do some damage of his own to his opponent.

Down two rounds, Stephens faced an uphill battle in the third and final round. Winning the final round wasn’t enough, as he needed a finish to secure victory.

One of my favourite fighters on the roster who put on a fight of the night performance this past weekend. Jeremy Stephens you sir have my respect and are crowned FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week.
