Mixed Fortunes For Daniel Dubois and Nicola Adams at the Royal Albert Hall
There will be far tougher opponents ahead for Daniel Dubois, but so far in his still fledgling career he has done very little wrong.
Ebenezer Tetteh came to the Royal Albert Hall unbeaten and with some kind of reputation, both are now gone. Tetteh looked out of his depth long before the first bell, all the fight week confidence seemed to evaporate when reality hit home.
Dubois quickly dispatched Tetteh inside a round, added the Commonwealth title to his collection and more belts will surely follow.
A fight with Joe Joyce looks a natural and a must. If Joyce wins the European title later this year, a fight for all their belts and so much more, is a mouth-watering prospect for early next year.
Dubois looks the real deal, and with so little in ring experience, amateur or pro, the worrying thing for the rest is, he will surely get better.
The future looks bright for Dubois, but it looks less certain for Nicola Adams. The former double Olympic champion looked drawn at the weigh-in, and fought very much like she had indeed struggled to make weight.
Adam’s punches lacked any real authority, and she looked as though energy consumption was very much on her mind. Maybe ring rust played a part, she can’t afford to be out of action for so long again. Adams has been out for nearly a year, her career needs to get back to some forward momentum.
Technically Adams was far superior to her game opponent Maria Salinas, but she was getting out worked for much of the contest, especially in the middle rounds, when the fight seemed to be slipping away.
I had it all square after 8 rounds, but thought Adams rallied in the final two rounds to get the decision, but a draw seemed a fair reflection, the challenger was convinced she was robbed, for closure both need the rematch.
