Moreno vs Askarov: A Mexican-Style Fight in Mexico City
By James Lee
This Saturday will see a Mexican-style flyweight fight in the country’s capital between Askar Askarov and Brandon Moreno.
Fans expected the flyweight division to dissolve earlier this year after long-time champion Demetrius Johnson’s departure from the company but surprisingly, the division has been reinvented and another exciting 125 lbs fight will take place on September 21st.
Undefeated Askar Askarov will make his highly-anticipated UFC debut after years of dominating in ACB, going 10-0 with all his wins coming by finish. Fans have wanted the Russian fighter to debut for years and his all-round game can pose a threat to any fighter in the division’s rankings.
His debut opponent will be the ever-exciting Brandon Moreno who will be returning to the UFC for his second stint after being cut during the period when the flyweight future was in doubt.
In his break from the UFC, he secured the LFA flyweight title with a fourth-round finish of Maikel Perez in California and will have the support of his home country in the fight on the main card on Saturday.
Moreno has multiple submissions win so could challenge Askarov’s usual style and the fight is the perfect introduction straight into the top of the division.
Fans should expect a fight to remember this weekend between the pair.
