FightPost Boxer of the Week: Daniel Dubois
By Gary Kittilsen
On a weekend that was filled with young prospects and future world champions taking the stage, only two of them had the courage to step in the ring with each other.
Daniel Dubois and Nathan Gorman, two of the biggest and fastest rising stars in the heavyweight division and all of British boxing, at the precious ages of just 21 and 23 laid it all on the line.
Showing the willingness to let their “0” go to elevate themselves into the title picture in the heavyweight division. In what was viewed as a 50/50 fight by most experts and pundits proved to be anything but as Dynamite Daniel Dubois proved too big, too powerful and too skilled for Gorman.
Blowing out his opponent in five one-sided rounds that culminated with a dynamite right hand that ended the night for Gorman and put Dubois on the heavyweight fast track. Dubois, of London, captured the British heavyweight title as well as out Fighter of The Week award.
The much-anticipated bout between two unbeaten fighters got off to a quick start, both men coming forward it was Gorman who looked sharp with perfectly timed counters in the opening round and looked to have something figured out about his opponent.
That all changed in the second however, as Dubois stayed on the attack, despite Gorman’s counter shots, jabbing his way in Dubois landed a huge overhand right that rattled Gorman. That powerful right hand proved to be the difference as Dynamite used it to batter Gorman to the canvas in the third and had him in serious trouble.
Dubois used his jab to again set up that big right hand in the fifth, that again staggered Gorman, who stood in valiantly and tried to fight back. However, it was to no avail. Another massive right hand put Gorman back down on the canvas and with about thirty seconds left in the fifth, referee Victor Loughlin reached the count of 10, ending the night for the Nantwich man and giving the Londoner the British heavyweight crown
Post-fight the newly minted British heavyweight champ said:
“Every fight is a learning fight, there is a lot to improve on. It’s great to win the British title. I wanted to control the fight behind my jab and then land the right hand,” the rapid improvement in the 21-year-old is strikingly obvious.
At a chiseled 6’5 and 240 pounds, Dubois is certainly a physical specimen with excellent power. He, however, proved to be much more than just a big, massive puncher. He showed the skills, footwork, and the jab that many critics did not think he possed in blowing out the highly touted Gorman.
With the highly impressive performance, Dubois has firmly established himself as the premier prospect in the heavyweight division and is on a fast track to challenging for a world title in the seemingly very near future.
