Dubois vs Gorman Preview
By Jack Price
All eyes will be on the O2 Arena in London this Saturday night as British boxing fans are treated to a mouth-watering clash between the exciting and powerful Daniel Dubois (11-0, 10 KO’s) and the skilfully talented Nathan Gorman (16-0, 11 KO’s) as they meet for the vacant British heavyweight title live on BT Sport.
It’s a battle between the two best young heavyweight stars that we have in the country right now and it will be very interesting to see who comes out on top.
Daniel Dubois is a man that looks and fights ahead of his years so it’s a shock to most people when they find out he’s only 21, and his rival Nathan Gorman is only 23-years old himself. Both look set for big futures in the heavyweight division whether they win or lose in this fight, but obviously the victor is going to get catapulted into the higher levels a lot faster and more emphatically so both men will see it as a must-win battle.
The two young fighters couldn’t be more different in terms of their fighting styles. It’s a classic boxer vs puncher match-up. Nathan Gorman, like his cousin Tyson Fury, is a slick, fast-handed boxer that relies more on his boxing and movement whereas Dubois is a big power-puncher that comes forward and looks to take his opponent out.
That being said, neither man looks like a one-trick pony. We have seen some explosive power from Gorman before and we have also seen Dubois try to be methodical at times when trying to break his opponent down.
However, there’s not much chance of Dubois out-boxing Gorman and there’s very little chance Gorman is going to out-punch Dubois so we should see both men stick to what they know best in this one.
The bookies and the majority of British boxing fans have Dubois as the favourite to get the victory, but I don’t see it like that myself.
I think a good boxer usually beats a good puncher as there is more to their game and they can mix things up in the ring.
I actually think Gorman will have a lot of success early on whilst he’s fresh. Dubois doesn’t look like the hardest guy to hit and Gorman has incredibly fast hands for a man of his size so I think we’ll see him land a lot of shots.
Dubois does look very tough though and I reckon he’ll be able to come through the punishment he takes in the first half of the fight.
The second half of the fight will be very interesting as it’s likely Gorman will be tiring from his high out-put in the first 6 rounds and this is where ‘DDD’ will look to come on strong and take over. It then comes down to the shape Gorman is in and how tough and fit he is.
I expect Dubois to close the gap in the later stages but I think his opponent may have just done enough to win it on the scorecards when the final bell rings.
Prediction: Gorman via a deserved split decision
