UFC 238: Cejudo Now a Two-Weight Champion
UFC 238 hit Chicago and three fighters made different types of statements in their quest for very different things.
Henry Cejudo became the latest simultaneous two-weight in the UFC as he recovered from a tricky 1st round against Marlon Moraes.
Moraes looked the likely winner in the 1st, brutal leg kicks doing obvious damage. But Cejudo adjusted, and with Moraes beginning to slow, Cejudo gradually took over, before the fight being waved off near the end of the 3rd.
Cejudo wants the big fights and the big money and even hinted at a run in a 3rd weight division, don’t rule Cejudo out from doing something no fighter has yet done.
Jessica Eye came into her title fight with Valentina Shevchenko as the number one contender, but still giving no real hope of victory.
Shevchenko dominated before a stunning brutal head kick early in the 2nd round knocked Eye out cold. Flyweight is the perfect division for Shevchenko, she might be the champion for a very long time.
Tony Ferguson vs Donald Cerrone promised much and it delivered. Ferguson landed a punch after the bell sounded for the end of the 2nd, but that shouldn’t ditract too much from what we saw.
After a close opener, Ferguson took control and it was starting to feel uncomfortable. Cerrone as brave as ever, took everything, but that sort of damage can last. I hope he takes time out to recover and even consider his future in the sport. He’s had a long career, and every punch he now takes, I wonder what price he will pay in later life.
Despite extending his win streak, a title shot is still no nearer. Khabib Nurmagomedov returns in September, so Ferguson will probably have to fight again before he gets his chance at the real UFC gold.
Ferguson might have to go through Justin Gaethje or even Conor McGregor for his shot that he so deserves.
