Joe Joyce: The ’Quietman’

Joe Joyce: The ’Quietman’

By Patrick O’Sullivan

Joe ’The Juggernaut’ Joyce has been a British amateur boxing icon, he captured the Olympic silver medal after a controversial loss to Tony Yoka of France in the gold medal 2016 Rio games Olympic final.

Joyce turned professional at 31, an age were most professional boxers are well into their careers with multiple fights, but Joyce guided by his manager Sam Jones has been fast-tracked in the heavyweight division and is ever so increasingly climbing the ranks.

Joyce captured the Commonwealth title in only his fourth contest over Jamaican boxer Lenroy Thomas. Now nine fights as a professional with 9 stoppages, Joyce is the silent man of the division.

Many boxing pundits see Joyce as slow, robotic and boring to watch. Whereas technically he is a force to be reckoned with, he can stand and trade, he has knockout power and has impressive cardio for a man of his size.

Joyce has now teamed up with former David Haye trainer Adam Booth, who is known for his speed, footwork and slick defence. Booth will guide Joyce to his toughest opponent to date.

On the undercard of Daniel Dubois vs Nathan Gorman on the 13th of July, up steps Bryant Jennings, an American former world title challenger against Wladamir Klitschko, Jennings has a professional record of 27-3.

If victorious against Jennings, Joyce is right in the mix with the top heavyweight contenders, I’d imagine a fight with the likes of Derek Chisora, Joseph Parker, Kubrat Pulev could be an ideal opponent going forward, but only if he sees off Jennings.

Previously training and sparring with Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, Joyce knows full well what it is like to be in with world-class fighters, I feel Joyce can be very successful under Adam Booth, It won’t surprise me if he is challenging for a world title towards the end of 2020.

Prediction for July 13th, Joyce late stoppage, he will be too much for Jennings and will dominate from the sound of the first bell.
