Algieri vs Coyle : One Last Throw of the Dice
By Jordan Victor
On Saturday night MSG will host the US debut of boxing superstar Anthony Joshua. With the likes of Katie Taylor, Callum Smith and others joining him on the undercard it promises to be some night.
But there is one contest on the card that sticks out and it does not require a huge name or big title to get the fans excited,
and that bout is Chris Algieri vs Tommy Coyle.
Two veterans of the game slugging it out for one last shot at the elite of the division.
A native New-Yorker defending hometurf against a Brit, this fight truly has the makings of an instant classic.
Algieri in his own right is a former world champion having won the WBO world super-lightweight title against Russian phenom Ruslan Provodnikov back in 2014.
In defeat, Algieri has also shared the ring with Errol Spence Jr, Amir Khan and the great Manny Pacquiao. The New Yorker is no stranger to the big stage and will look for another big win on Saturday night, as he attempts to gain one last chance at the elite level in his storied career.
On the other side of the ring will be Hull’s own Tommy “Boom Boom” Coyle. Coyle holds a record of 25 wins and 4 losses, and has long been a staple of the British boing scene. Claiming the Commonwealth title along the way, whilst also competing for the British title on two previous occasions.
Unlike his opponent on the night, Coyle has never competed for a world title, with his most high-stakes contest having been a losing effort against current WBC mandatory Luke Campbell back in 2015.
But the Brit is coming off a win in his US debut against Ryan Kielczweski, and under the guidance of trainer Jamie Moore – Coyle will look to finally earn the world title shot that has eluded him for so long.
Algieri vs Coyle will be a classic and is my nailed on pick for fight of the night. Two fighters at the end of their respective careers looking to throw the dice one last time. Two fighters who despite defeat never quit, and two fighters who always put on a show for the fans.
So although Saturday night may be headlined by Joshua and Ruiz Jr with other world titles to support, don’t be surprised if these two veterans end up stealing the show once again.
