FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Michel Pereira
By Dan McConnell
This weeks’ fighter of the week was a tough selection with former BAMMA, Cage Warriors and UFC fighter Scott Askham winning the KSW middleweight title with a stunning flying knee knockout. Julio Arce’s expertly timed head-kick against Julian Erosa at UFC Rochester and Felicia Spencer submitting UFC featherweight Megan Anderson in her UFC debut.
In New York at UFC Rochester, on the early prelims of the welterweight headline act between former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos and former title contender Kevin Lee, a man who made the walk to the octagon for the very first time got the applauds.
Brazilian welterweight Michel Periera faced a tough UFC debut test, when he was welcomed to his new promotion by experienced Englishman Danny ‘Hot Chocolate’ Roberts, who had 20 professional MMA fights and eight octagon appearances to his name.
The debutant Periera came out in an unorthodox stance, throwing off the movement and aggressive boxing style that Roberts is known to produce. The 170-pound Brazilian attempted a showtime kick off the side of the octagon, showing his explosiveness and athletic ability as well as a warning his opponent of what’s to come.
In the very first round Pereira landed a hard-flying knee to the chin of Roberts out of nowhere, following up with a devastating straight right punch which instantly switched off the lights of the Brit. The referee rushed in to end the contest and the American crowd went crazy for what just unfolded in-front of their eyes.
Usually in your UFC debut, fighters show a method of caution to find their feet in their new promotion and to help work out the rhythm of their opponent. But Pereira had other ideas, showing why he is a new exciting prospects in the welterweight division!
As far as UFC debuts go, Michel Periera’s was right up there with one of the best. For his impressive highlight reel victory over an experienced Danny Roberts, Michel Periera takes home this week’s FightPost MMA Fighter of the week!
