Ultimate Boxxer 3 Preview

Ultimate Boxxer 3 Preview

By Henry Walter

The Ultimate Boxxer tournament returns to the O2 tonight as eight boxers compete to win the £50,000 cash prize.

Ranked middleweights from the UK will battle over three, three minute rounds at the O2 Indigo to decide the tournament champion.

Competing for the prize will be:

Grant Denis, 12-1 (2 KOs)

Wily veteran Denis is one to watch for the tournament. A former Southern Area Champion, Denis couldn’t quite cut it at top domestic level but has had more than enough to see off many fringe contenders during his career. He could well make his experience count tonight.

Tey Lynn-Jones, 11-1 (2 KOs)

Jones is another former Southern Area Champion. However his eleven wins have mostly been over journeyman and he has yet to prove he is capable of beating legitimate ranked contenders. He will need to box to the best of his ability to be succeed tonight.

Sean Phillips, 5-0-1 (1 KO)

Phillips is young and unbeaten but his lack of experience could hurt him. He has yet to fight anyone with a winning record and will be up against it tonight.

Joe Hurn, 10-1 (6 KOs)

Hurn has a decent record but like Phillips’ it has been built against opponents with losing records. His power will be his main asset in this tournament.

Kieron Conway, 9-0 (3 KOs)

Conway has began to step up his level of opposition in recent bouts and has continued his winning ways to move to 9-0. He hasn’t faced the standard of opposition that Lynn-Jones and Denis have but is something of an unknown quantity and can’t be written off.

Josh Groombridge, 7-1 (4 KOs)

Groombridge has proved his formidable power several times as a pro, even taking out seasoned journeymen Vladimir Fecko and Kieron Gray inside the distance, but he will be facing a far higher standard of opposition tonight. His 2008 TKO loss to Emmanuel Mousinga doesn’t bode well for him in tonights company.

Derrick Osaze 6-0 (1 KO)

Peckham’s Osaze is another unbeaten addition with no names on his record. It is very difficult to gauge Osaze’s potential but his lack of power will likely hinder him in this format.

Kaan Hawes, 5-0-1 (0 KO’s)

Hawes turned pro late and at 32 has just 6 fights to his name. Of the all the fighters in this tournament he looks, on paper at least, to be the least likely to succeed, yet his five wins were achieved with seeming ease and he will be fired up to prove himself tonight.

Whoever wins tonight with four unbeaten fighters on the card and four hungry prospects fireworks are guaranteed.
