Jay Whelan Wheels to Start Rolling in Brentwood
Former world kickboxing champion Jay Whelan is eager to kick off his professional boxing career in style this weekend.
The Essex-based prospect, who won multiple world titles before switching to boxing, makes his bow on Saturday’s #MTKFightNight at the Brentwood Centre – live on iFL TV.
Whelan said: “I’m just excited, excited, excited! I can’t wait to get in there, hear that first bell and get to show what I can do.
“Fans can expect a lot of speed from me and some good counter-punching. It’d be great to bag a stoppage win on my professional debut.
“It’s a crazy coincidence that everyone in our gym comes from a kickboxing background. Even one of our coaches Adam Hart was in that game!
“I believe I can be a world champion one day, I had the dream and believed it in my kickboxing career and it ended up happening so there’s no reason it won’t in the boxing game as well.”
Joining Whelan on a busy bill in Essex is his Dutch gym-mate – and another former world kickboxing king – in Serginio Kanters.
Topping the card on the night will be undefeated local hero Danny Dignum, who faces a former world title challenger in Rafa Jackiewicz with the likes of Danny Egbunike, Shaquille Day and many more forming a lengthy undercard.
