FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week:
Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone
Not so long ago Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone had lost 4 fights out of 5 and his days at the top looked over. But now with added family responsibilities, he now fights to feed, and the hunger is very much back.
A win over Mike Perry started the resurgence then a move back down to lightweight added to it, a division he was always better suited to.
On Saturday in Ottawa, Cerrone made it 3 wins on the bounce in a hugely impressive display against the higher ranked Al Iaquinta.
Cerrone for most of the 5 rounds looked in control, despite Iaquinta refusing to oblige in being stopped, which looked probable on a number of occasions.
The judges scorecards of 49-45, 49-45, 49-46 were a mere formality and clearly reflected that Cerrone was a fairly dominant winner against the ever brave Iaquinta.
Cerrone had to absorb a number of heavy shots but the size and range was telling, Cerrone looked much the bigger man.
Conor McGregor was mentioned post fight, but McGregor is unlikely to answer the call. But whoever is next, Cerrone is now firmly back in the conversation, something which after his loss to Leon Edwards looked impossible, retirement was far more likely at that point.
For his win over Iaquinta, Cerrone is this week’s FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week.
