Under The Radar: Bryce Mitchell vs Bobby Moffett

By Ben Jessop

The octagon once again returns to Nashville, Tennessee this weekend to showcase Fight Night 148 which is headlined by a welterweight showdown between Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson and Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis.

The card hasn’t generated as much noise as the previous event, which was headlined by Jorge Masvidal vs Darren Till and as a result, it looks like there are a few gems hidden in the preliminary card as well as a couple even hidden on the main card.

The co-main event hosts Curtis Blaydes vs Justin Willis which should be a real good heavyweight showdown, further down the main card you see Luis Pena vs Steven Peterson which is particularly hard to call but an interesting fight that will most likely go the distance. On the pre-lims a great fight between Randa Markos and Angela Hill takes place along with Marlon Vera vs Frankie Saenz.

The card is littered with fights that have all gone under the radar but for me, most surprisingly, the fight that I’ve seen receive little praise despite being a great matchup with an undefeated fighter is Bryce Mitchell vs Bobby Moffett.

Mitchell looks to retain his undefeated record (10-0-0 with one in the UFC coming via majority decision against Tyler Diamond in July of 2018) against Moffett who is currently on a four fight win steak along with one in the UFC against Chas Kelly via technical submission (Brabo Choke) in November of 2018.

Mitchell suffered a gruesome groin injury involving a power tool back late in 2018, I’ll let you draw your own conclusions on that, or Google it if you’re brave enough but it’ll be great to see him fighting again.

Mitchell has a ridiculously good submission game with eight of ten wins coming via sub with the other two being given via decision so this will be something Moffett has to be weary of. Moffett has the ability to go to ground and grapple alongside Mitchell as well as go the distance but he also has finished via TKO/KO previously so Mitchell has it all to watch out for.

It’s a great good matchup, both stylistically and in terms of what a win could do for the fighter who comes out victorious. Both fighters have one fight within the UFC in the already stacked featherweight division, they both have a long, long road to the top fifteen but this could be the start of the momentum.
