The Buatsi Basics

The Buatsi Basics

By Ben Gibson

Joshua Buatsi has taken the light heavyweight division by storm since he first entered the professional arena on 1st July 2017.

The light heavyweight from Croydon is currently 9-0 in the squared circle and has won 7 of his bouts by way of knock out.

With Buatsi on the undercard of Charlie Edwards first title defence against Angel Moreno on the 23 March this year, here are the Buatsi Basics.

When Buatsi enters the ring on the 23 March he will be taking part in his 10th professional bout against Liam Conroy in the Copper Box Arena. This will be his fourth title bout in as many fights, and this is also his third one to be set in London.

In all of his bouts that have had a title on the line, whether it has been vacant or a defence the 25-year-old has won by either knockout or a technical knockout.

Buatsi holds the WBA International light heavyweight Title and was set to take on Callum Johnson for the BBBofC British Light Heavyweight Title, however Johnson vacated the title in order to fight Sean Monaghan in America.

When Buatsi last entered the ring he stopped Renold Quinlan in a show of dominance in just two minutes at the O2.

This impressive stoppage was the third successive win in which he has stopped his opponent in the first round, the other two being, Tony Averlant and Andrejs Pokumeiko.
Buatsi has an impressive knock out percentage of 77.7% and after following his current form of four knock out wins in a row he will be looking to carry on this path.

His division is full of very good fighters and has recently seen the addition of Tyson Fury’s younger brother Tommy Fury. However, Buatsi has a good mentor in Anthony Joshua after signing with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

But it was not just Eddie who was interested in signing Buatsi as Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and his promotional team, Mayweather promotions tried to sign Buatsi after his impressive performance at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

However, Buatsi turned the ‘Money’ down and went back to the UK and whilst he was back signed for Matchroom and also gained a degree.

Since his introduction on to boxing’s main stage Buatsi has never failed to disappoint and while he will surely be the bookies favourite entering the fight on the 23 March, it can definitely be said that it is a must watch bout for all boxing fans as his career advances to the next stage.
