Georges St-Pierre To Retire?
Multiple outlets are reporting that perhaps the greatest ever Mixed Martial Artist, Georges St-Pierre will announce his retirement from the sport tomorrow at a press conference in Canada.
St-Pierre (26-2) last competed at UFC 217 when he become a two-weight UFC champion when he relieved Michael Bisping of his middleweight crown. The Canadian had hoped to add a title in a third weight but the negotiations for a fight with current UFC lightweight champion KhabibNurmagomedov have apparently failed to conclude with an agreement, prompting GSP to call it a day.
If GSP does wave goodbye to MMA he leaves the sport on his own terms, and goes out a winner. St-Pierre suffered only two defeats in his career, to Matt Hughes and Matt Serra, both were avenged. The revenge win over Serra in 2008 started his second run as UFC welterweight champion and only ended when St-Pierre decided to retire in 2013 after a controversial win over Johnny Hendricks.
If the news is indeed confirmed on Thursday it will mark the end of a long successful career and personally speaking I think the decision is wise. I have no desire to see GSP being battered into seeing sense, and at 37 he has nothing left to prove. Just for once seeing a great fighter leave at the right time without sustaining a beating is a refreshing change and I hope others take note.
