FightPost MMA Fighter of the Week: Yair Rodriguez

By Kieran Cobley

This week’s MMA Fighter of the Week honours go to Yair Rodriguez after his spectacular last second KO victory against Chan Sung Jung at UFC Fight Night Denver.

Jung and Rodriguez went all out for five rounds, with the fight being decided in the last second of the fight as “Pantera” countered “The Korean Zombie” with an upwards elbow that knocked the Korean out.

The fight was very striking heavy and considering both fighters styles this wasn’t a major surprise, with both men having black belts in Taekwon-do.

Jung looked to be winning the fight as he seemed to initiate most of the exchanges, and pushed the pace of the fight, which was ultimately his downfall, as on his final push he was countered and KO’d with a spectacular knockout, and how fitting is it that on the card celebrating 25 years of the IFC, that the promotion puts on one of the best fights this year, with one of the most spectacular knockouts in the promotions history.

Rodriguez will look to climb further up the rankings, with a potential title fight next year, and hopefully, a fight against Zabit Magomedsharipov soon.

Honourable mentions go to Donald Cerrone, who broke the record for UFC finishes and UFC victories ask he locked in an arm bar in the first round against Mike Perry to secure his record-breaking win, and to Maycee Barber who TKO’d Hannah Cifers in their fight.
