Mayweather: Here We Go Again

Mayweather: Here We Go Again

By Matthew Dean

In a world which often celebrates the outlandish the “Pretty Boy”of boxing has excelled himself again. Mayweather is apparently unretired again.

Yes that Floyd Mayweather 50-0-0 (27 KOs), yet again we will see him inside a ring. But not necessarily how we would have imagined.

Not against Pacquiao.
Not against McGregor.
Not even Nurmagomedov.

This time not even in Las Vegas, but instead, on December 31st in the Saitama Super Arena of Tokyo, Japan

Apparently “Money” has agreed an ongoing deal with the Japanese MMA RIZIN promotion company. The first event of which at Rizin will pit him against Tenshin Nasukawa, a Japanese kickboxer (27-0 kickboxing and 4-0-0 in MMA).

We might question why he is venturing back once more and the only answers are that he needs the spotlight and the glory and maybe a little extra cash flow pumped into his vast fortune?

Rumours are circulating that Mayweather needs the money but is it possible to waste hundreds of millions of dollars? Ask Mike Tyson, he achieved it.

Mayweather’s lifestyle is hardly frugal. We know it involves frittering extortionate quantities of cash in night spots and he brags of gambling huge amounts on social media. Then we can add the houses.., the cars… and the ladies in his life. However let’s also not forget that he is known to be generous towards fellow boxers who have fallen on hard times. All of these contribute towards a dwindling bank balance so who is to say.

Perhaps we should also remember that he isn’t the first to be lured back to a ring as well. Many a boxer has fallen on hard times through ill-advised spending or mismanagement by their team.

The match does have echoes of the debacle between Muhammad Ali and Antonio Inoki the Japanese wrestler which ended in what appeared to be a fixed result.

Who knows if this will happen? We have heard stories of this ilk before and we will hear them again.

What rules will be in play? these are all details yet to be confirmed.

Whatever happens we can only hope that with Floyd’s age now a factor that all participants remain healthy and safe and benefit in some way.
