Ref’s Blood Stained Shirt Helps Keep Hertfordshire Youngsters Out Of Trouble

By Dean Wigzell

Robbie Davies Jr and Glenn Foot served us up a proper ‘fight’ last weekend at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.

At times ill-tempered and threatening to boil over, Watford based referee Bob Williams was at the centre of a lot of the action. Williams had to step in between the two fighters and have stern words on more than one occasion.

A cut above the eye of Davies Jr produced a lot of blood, and referee Williams’s white shirt had turned a bold crimson colour by the time the judges cards were read out.

Williams was actually spotted sat ringside for the main event that night, Ritson v Patera, still wearing his blood stained shirt.

Images of Williams’ shirt accompanied most reports on the fight and the referee, who is also Chairman of Watford based charity BoxCleva decided to auction it to raise much-needed funds for the charity.

BoxCleva was founded in 2010 by Williams, a serving Firefighter, to help keep children off the street after he was approached by a local Truancy Officer.

The charity now supports approximately 260 children at 13 sites across Hertfordshire and received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2016. Former World Champion John Conteh MBE serves as Patron.

The sessions delivered aim to instil discipline, respect, perseverance, fair-play and fitness within a safe and controlled environment. Healthy Living and Drug Awareness workshops are also delivered as part of the 40 week course.

Since the project began Anti Social Behaviour in its areas of operation has fallen by up to 39%.
