UFC 229: [RE-CAP]

Nearly all of the attention was on Khabib vs McGregor but UFC 229 had so much more to offer than that. Sadly the rest of the card will be over shadowed by the antics after the main event, but we got some real drama in the proper manner from the rest of the card.

I have covered Khabib and McGregor in detail already, but what happens going forward is very much in the air. McGregor has already posted he is looking forward to the rematch, but despite McGregor usually getting what he wants I am not sure he will get his wish, at least in the immediate future.

Tony Ferguson extended his winning run in a wild crazy fight with Anthony Pettis and should, must even, get either a shot at Khabib or the vacant title if he gets stripped for his involvement in the brawl following his win over McGregor. I’m not sure where McGregor goes from here, if Nate Diaz beats Dustin Poirier, Diaz might end up fighting Ferguson for the vacant title. If he loses to Poirier, would the UFC book the trilogy fight with McGregor with both coming off losses. For once McGregor might have to play the waiting game.

With McGregor not defending the lightweight title after his win over Eddie Alvarez and putting the division on hold while he did his thing, the hope was that UFC 229 would finally clear up the title picture, now it seems its more complicated than ever.

Pettis didn’t get the win, but even in defeat he proved he is back, and he came so close to beating Ferguson.

The light heavyweight ranks have been a little light talent wise recently but Dominick Reyes showed he could be the new blood the division badly needs.

Derrick Lewis seemingly hampered by eye and back problems, a gas tank that was empty, and needing a knockout entering the final round, got what he needed with just 11 seconds remaining.

Michelle Waterson showed her game is still improving in her hard fought win over Felice Herrig and inches a little closer to the top tier of the rankings.
