Sor Rungvisai Back in Action
By Matthew Dean
Sor Rungvisai (46-4-1 41KOs) is back in action defending his WBC Super-flyweight belt against Iran Diaz (14-2-3. 6KOs), one of the fastest rising talents in Mexican boxing. On Saturday 6th October at the Impact Arena Bangkok Thailand he will be the headline fight at One Championship’s Kingdom of Heroes, an event which will feature Boxing, MMA, Muay Thai and Kickboxing all on the same card.
This is not the first time he has been at the helm of a main event, having headlined Superfly 1 and 2 in the States. Promoter Tom Loeffler had hoped to rematch him against Estrada at Superfly 3 but Sor Rungvisai elected to fight in his native Thailand.
One Championship is the largest global sports media property in Asian history so it would only be natural that Sor Rungvisai would want to fight on an event such as this.
Sor Rungvisai (aka Wisaksil Wangek) is a two-time winner of the Super-Flyweight strap.
He has been champion since 2015.
He hasn’t lost a fight since 2014 when his first reign was ended by Carlos Cuadras (29-0-0) on a technical decision.
In the 19 fights since this loss, he has only gone the distance twice, once in the first fight against Roman Gonzalez in March 2017 ( whom he later obliterated in the rematch KO Rd.4) and then against Juan Francisco Estrada in February 2018.
Sor Rungvisai has acknowledged the talent of Diaz though, the WBC Latino Super Flyweight Champion.
“I am excited to showcase my skills at home in Bangkok. As a world champion boxer, this is a rare opportunity for me to be able to compete in front of my people. I thank ONE Championship for the honor, and I will do my best to retain my title. I am very deep in preparations right now for one of the most significant bouts of my career.”
However let’s remember this is the 13th fight since winning back the title and some may ask if the number is unlucky for some?
Diaz likewise is relishing the challenge as he seeks to become Mexico’s 187th world titleholder in boxing. It is not the first time he has risen to a challenge and excelled with his most notable victories coming over former world champions Hernan “Tyson” Marquez and Luis Concepcion.
Diaz’s camp has been well-prepared, employing the wisdom and experience of Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez in a special advisory role and Juan Francisco Estrada as a sparring partner. Diaz is respectfully confident about his opponent but knows this will be a tough fight
“I’m going to Rungvisai’s home, but at the end of the day, in the ring, there will be him and me with a pair of gloves. Nothing more. We’re going to test each other, and the one with more hunger and the best preparation will be the winner.
He added that he has to beat Srisaket, and bring home the belt he has always dreamed of. Being Mexican he is also aware of the history of champions before him and stated:
“The world knows that when a Mexican presents himself, it’s a guarantee of a spectacle, and of a very tough fight.”
Both boxers are ready for this big stage event. My prediction would be Sor Rungvisai, his power and greater experience giving him the edge.
