Callum Smith Delivers On The Hype
After a seemingly never ending wait for his moment of truth, Callum Smith delivered on the hype and can now rightfully claim to be the best super middleweight on the planet.
The end in the 7th came suddenly but the threat was always there. Groves’s habit of dropping his hands hindered him throughout and ultimately cost him.
A stunning left hook started the beginning of the end, and a flurry of punches, including a sickening body punch which removed all doubt, ended a fight which had the feel of a passing of a torch type of fight.
Despite having his own success throughout a gripping contest, Smith always seemed to have the last word in the exchanges. Groves always seemed to struggle with the height and reach advantages of his opponent, and the tighter Smith looked the more likely winner from very early on.
Smith’s tactics were spot on and he showed impressive maturity and patience in his breakthrough fight.
Groves, classy in defeat, faces a uncertain future and retirement might be his best option. Smith at 28 meanwhile is at the start of something which could be very special indeed.
