Joshua Gets Past Povetkin in 7

Joshua Gets Past Povetkin.

Anthony Joshua survived a tentative start to stop the game challenge of Alexander Povetkin in round 7.

Too many people who should know better wrote Povetkin off, a former Olympic champion with only one defeat to the best heavyweight of recent times was always likely to provide stiff competition for the still learning Joshua, and so it proved.

In the early rounds Joshua looked wary of what was coming in his direction, but apart from a slight wobble at the end of the 1st, he soaked up all of Povetkin’s punches before gradually getting on top as the fight progressed.

Povetkin started so well, showing speed and variety which Joshua struggled to cope with, and the champion seemed reluctant to let his own hands go.

The tide started to turn in the 6th as Povetkin started to slow from his early endeavours, and Joshua impressively finished the job a round later, becoming the first man to stop Povetkin in the process.

Despite the early struggles, I thought Joshua showed maturity and patience to get past his dangerous mandatory.

Joshua returns in April, Deontay Wilder or Tyson Fury would be preferred, but Dillian Whyte is far more likely.
